There is no single fixed percentage of plagiarism that is considered acceptable. Every university or institution sets its own threshold. However, it is widely accepted that the most important factor is the context of any matched content, not the number itself.
Direct quotes that are properly referenced are not considered plagiarism. Quoting a source to support your argument is fine, as long as it is clearly marked and cited. What matters is that your work also shows your own critical analysis rather than over-relying on existing material.
Many universities consider a small percentage of similarity (for example, between 5% and 15%) to be normal. This usually accounts for properly referenced quotations, standard terminology, or common phrases. However, higher similarity can still be acceptable if the matches are legitimate quotations or references.
Even so, a low percentage can still be problematic if the matching text contains unreferenced ideas or copied paragraphs. It is always best to review your report carefully and make sure that any borrowed material is correctly cited and supported by your own discussion.
To summarise:
- There is no universal acceptable percentage.
- Properly referenced quotes are not plagiarism.
- Your work should include your own analysis and original writing.
- Always check your institution's plagiarism policy for their specific rules.
